Our Music Director, Benjamin Buchanan (b. 1989) is a Baltimore based organist, beatboxing toy pianist, composer, and performance artist. Described by the late three-time Nobel prize nominated poet, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, as a “most quickly enflaming young composer,” he has received performances of his music in Hungary, Italy, Sweden, and throughout the United States. In addition to being the pianist for the Maryland Choral Society, he is the co-founder and assistant director of Voices Rise: A Baltimore Choir of Hope working with individuals suffering from or at risk of homelessness to create an experience of community through music.
Benjamin holds Master of Music degrees in Music Composition and Music Theory Pedagogy from the Peabody Conservatory where he studied under Michael Hersch, and a Bachelor’s of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Tulsa. He teaches composition and music theory at the Peabody Preparatory, and can be seen performing throughout the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas.
