St. John's Church Grounds

Nestled in the heart of the Western Run Valley, St. John's stretches over more than 11 acres of lush, picturesque grounds, that are dense with historical significance. Many of our parishioners often recount how the beauty of this place fills them with a sense of God’s presence.

Please come and see the grounds for yourself, and discover their natural beauty, historical significance, and spiritual gifts.

Historic Stone Church: A Testament to Time and Faith

The centerpiece of our campus is our Gothic revival stone church, with its soaring 100-foot spire. Its origins date back to 1816, and it underwent a significant reconstruction in 1869. Inside, visitors will find intricate scissor arches, meticulous wood carvings, and remarkable stained-glass windows chronicling the Gospel of St. John. The harmony of the church's architectural grandeur and the melodious notes from the Taylor & Boody organ create an atmosphere of reverence and awe.

Contemplative Spaces and Community Hubs

A serene walk from the main church gently guides parishioners past a peaceful fountain, which during the warmer months, becomes the chosen spot for our 8 a.m. service on Sunday mornings. Further down the path you’ll find the Parish Hall—a hub for community interactions, fellowship, and hospitality. Built in 2003, the hall houses the church offices, a library, several classrooms, and a chapel, and also plays host to a myriad of events from community meetings and parish celebrations to chamber concerts.

The Historic Rectory: Preserving Legacy

The Rectory at St. John's, built in 1842, holds the distinction of being the oldest rectory in the Diocese of Maryland that still serves its primary purpose. Enhancing its beauty is the meticulously cared for rector's garden.

Historic Cemetery

Our cemetery has offered a final resting place for our parishioners for over two centuries and continues to do so today. In the older part of the cemetery, you will find the weathered graves of many of the Western Run Valley’s founding families. These age-old stones whisper stories of the rich history of our parish. The devoted volunteers of the St. John’s Cemetery Committee painstakingly maintain and restore gravestones, ensuring that the resting place retains its beauty and dignity.

For Our Youngest Parishioners

Ensuring both enjoyment and safety for our youngest members, the church grounds also feature a secure playground and a vast play lawn, surrounded by a protective fence.

A Sanctuary Enclosed, Yet Always Open

Complementing the landscape and adding to the rich heritage of our grounds is an elegant and historic stone wall, gracefully accented by a traditional lychgate.
